How To Get The Best Head Shots!

First let me say this advice and the images below represents a span of about 9 years of head shots.

  1. Pick a photographer whose work you love
  2. Be coachable
  3. Get in shape or accept where you are
  4. Plan and WORK on your expressions
  5. Wear what you LOVE on yourself Nothing that distracts from   YOU! It's all about you and your personality.  You will never get called to a casting for what you are 'wearing'
  6. Give it up to the studio.  My and my MUA and     STYLIST are a TEAM and you hired US for a reason. In the end we will NAIL that head shot!

Shooting Annie

When I was approached to photograph emerging pop artist Annie Bany for the artwork for an upcoming album project, single release and accompanying publicity campaign, I did my homework.   I listened to some of her music and checked out the existing images online, found her on Facebook and Twitter, too.  I was impressed!  She has a great voice, very easy on the eyes and delivers a song that makes you believe it.  But when she arrived at the studio for the shoot, she took on an entirely new dimension.   I’ve been doing commercial photography and music photography a long time and when someone walks in to my studio I usually get a good idea of a client’s energy right away.  But with Annie, I could tell there was a depth to her that was just waiting to come out to play.

Seconds later her stylist and MUA walk in followed by her wardrobe stylist and manager.  By the time her team was set up and read for business, I already knew this shoot would be a lot of fun!  (Did I fail to mention they also brought balloons and party streamers?)

They filled me in on what they expected from the shoot, and some direction to start with.  One thing I’ve learned is that when photographing an artist with such a fresh spirit and immediate presence such as Annie’s, ANYTHING can happen and usually does, so I need to be ready to capture it all at a second’s notice.

It only took a couple frames in front of my camera before Annie was laughing with me (and at me at times, which is often the case when you work with me) and delivering some great frames.  I knew this was going to be a great session!

By the end of the shoot, she had everyone at the shoot was laughing and having a great time and that’s how I knew we had some fantastic shots!   You can’t always predict or even ‘design’ a great shot during a session, but like Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said, ‘I know it when I see it’
